Stop Making Sense

One of my favorite DVDs of alltime is a filmed concert by the Talking Heads from 1983, perfectly titled “Stop Making Sense.” I often feel like this is the motto I want the world to live by, in order for us all to fully enjoy it. I grew up listening to the Talking Heads (thanks to Dr. Daddy Starkey), but never realized how fantastic David Byrne was until I saw this film.  I can’t stop smiling when I watch it. I think it also represents why I love music and musicians so much – especially from the 70’s and 80’s – the ones that are pure passion, pure creativity and pure rays of joy and life.   Some random youtube commenter explains my thoughts on this particular Talking Heads song perfectly – “…Rarely see such a seriously tight performance by performers who refuse to take themselves or each other or the song or the performance too seriously. But man do they nail it. It’s a riot of attitude – that never misses a beat. I love the black chicks adding their own narration. Hell, everybody on stage is narrating as they go, and everybody gets it right. It’s the United Nations of frenetic funk at top speed..”

I highly recommend watching this DVD on a big screen some cool, cooky night with your friends. David Byrne and his peeps are too great, too silly and too infectiously joyous to pass up.

Sometimes the blues is just a passing bird

Kristian Matsson (The Tallest Man on Earth) is one of my favorite musicians of this decade. His music puts a spell on me; reminding me to let go and stand proud of wherever I am in life.

The art of being a simple girl

My life soundtrack in 2008 consisted mostly of songs from a simple girl named Jessie Baylin.  Her music was fresh air in my lungs when I first saw her live at the WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon in fall of that year.  Today I discovered her latest album “Little Spark” – where she has managed to pick-up exactly where she left off. Her music still crisp like a rainy day and  romantic like a lazy one in summer.

You will see when you watch her video for “Hurry Hurry” below, she is a beautiful, simple girl. She is everything I strive to be; patient, whimsical and understated. But even more captivating than her endearing demeanor is her approach to music. Her song writing is poetry and her voice, honest. I look forward to seeing this 27-year-old force of a woman blossom and begin to receive attention for what she has created – her Jessie Baylin brand that is so deliciously authentic.

Fav New Music Websites

1. WeAreHunted – A fantastic online music chart my friend Spencer turned me on to. User-friendly and addictive. Great find Spencedog.

2. TheHypeMachine – I just spent hours upon hours listening to new songs, artists and mixes on this website.  I discovered a lot of really cool songs under the “Twitter most hyped” section. I stumbled upon dozens of blogs and websites allowing free downloads and links to some of my new favorite artists.

3.StereoMood – Really excited about this one.  It’s a music radio website like Pandora, but it pre-categorizes songs by mood.  It was raining today so I listened to the “It’s Raining” station, which offered hundreds of mood relevant songs to sift through. Pretty much the perfect website. Credit to my dear friend Miss Margo Winton for finding this one. 🙂

4. TuneGlue – A simple and awesome program to help anyone find new music.  Just pick a band or artist you like and the program will create a web of relevant or related artists.

5. Etunes – “ The indie iTunes — Hardcore music fans are migrating to eMusic, the iTunes Music Store’s cheaper, cooler cousin.”

5. OneTrackMind –  This is a daily music blog which spotlights a different individual song each day. Each featured track is critically assessed and open to discussion via user ratings and comments.

6. TheCouchSessions – This is an online magazine dedicated to all alternative urban music lovers.  They provide current and quality reviews, interviews and discussion about new and fresh new talent.  Great resource.

7. RcrdLbl – Free downloads of awesome remixes and other great new artists. I have found some serious gems on here.

Oldies but always goodies:

1. Pitchfork – The essential independent music guide.

2. Lastfm – The world’s largest online music catalogue, powered by your scrobbles. Free internet radio, videos, photos, stats, charts, biographies and concerts.

3. Pandora – My personal favorite internet radio service personalized to help you find new music based on your old and current favorites.

4. Grooveshark – Allows you to create internet radio stations and listen to songs for free. No “song-skipping” limitation like Pandora.

What other sites or programs am I missing? I’d love to know!…cough cough Kelly Montgomery?…
